Twitter’s First-Ever Post Sold for RM11.9 Million to Malaysia-Based Man

Twitter boss Jack Dorsey sold his first tweet as an NFT for just over US$2.9mil (RM11.9mil) to a man based in Malaysia, yesterday (22 March).

The tweet is in the form of a non-fungible token (NFT), a kind of unique digital asset that has exploded in popularity so far in 2021.

The tweet – “just setting up my twttr” – was Dorsey’s first tweet, made on 21 March 2006. The post became the first-ever tweet, launching a global platform that has become a controversial and dominant force in civil society.

It was bought using the cryptocurrency Ethereum, for 1630.5825601 ETH, which was worth $2,915,835.47 at the time of sale, Cameron Hejazi, the CEO and co-founder of Cent confirmed.

Cent confirmed the buyer is Sina Estavi, who says that he is based in Malaysia and is a CEO of the blockchain company Bridge Oracle. Estavi told Reuters he was “thankful” when asked for comment about the purchase.

Dorsey tweeted thanks to @sinaEstavi, along with a message indicating the proceeds were sent to Give Directly, a non-profit in East Africa that helps people living in poverty.
