Nirvana is suing Marc Jacobs for International Copyright Infringement on the band’s iconic smiley logo, as reported by Forbes.

Back in November 2018, Marc Jacobs released the Bootleg Redux Grunge Collection which features a t-shirt, a sweatshirt and a pair of socks, all utilising a design that resembles the famous Nirvana’s logo created by Kurt Cobain back in 1991. We mean… it does say ‘Bootleg’ in the collection’s name.

The suit claims Jacobs’ unauthorised “use of Nirvana’s copyrighted image on and to promote its products is intentional, and is part and parcel of a wider campaign to associate the entire ‘Bootleg Redux Grunge’ collection with Nirvana, one of the founders of the ‘Grunge’ musical genre, so as to make the ‘Grunge’ association with the collection more authentic”.

Fashion outlets Saks and Neiman Marcus are included in the suit for selling the allegedly infringing items. Nirvana is now seeking monetary damages and injunctive relief to stop the sale of the collection.
